Michael, in reply to your question about rate structures, the discount applies to initial setup or reorganization of paid search campaigns and monthly run rates. On your FAQs issue, I could have one of my people do that for you on an hourly basis, drawing against a retainer.

If you’re running a serious campaign, I recommend using at least two or three engines and considering contextual ads.

Campaigns are extremely labor intensive. You need someone (or two people on a three-person team) tracking your numbers every day, proceeded by a professional keyword analysis.

Campaigns left on autopilot simply waste money, as we can see from what the major call center and offshore IT companies are doing. They don’t understand the full parameters of SEM metrics, don’t know how to read metrics or benchmarking data, and don’t know how to act on metrics.

They don’t understand branding within the context of SEM, don’t understand how to extend their brand or how to defend it. Quick to assert their competence to handle customer acquisition for other companies, they fail miserably in creating streamlined ‘happy paths’ for customer acquisition by their own business units.

Having recently benchmarked two major multinational call center companies in this area, I’ve found that industry changes in client-acquisition practices and technologies have outstripped the adaptive capabilities of some major old-line call center companies. This gives hope to younger, smaller companies that understand and are not afraid to adopt current best practices.

Michael, in reply to your question on SEM, yes I’ve run a couple hundred Google programs and twice that number on Yahoo.

From benchmarking several of the Indian majors, it is clear that none of them come close to serving as a good role model, at least in the U.S. market. That’s understandable to the extent that it’s difficult to realize how keywords are used in a foreign market, just as I would have great difficulty running a paid search campaign properly in the Indian market (despite being a PIO).

Desi keyword buyers are all competing for the same short list of keywords. This drives the price up for everyone using those keywords.

Desi websites fail to convert properly even with high CTRs. Paid search is not being complemented by FREE SEM techniques for SEO and direct search.

When botched sales opportunities are taken into consideration as well, Desi ad buyers might as well take their money out into the middle of the road, pile it up, and set the whole thing on fire.

On the basis of recent benchmarking studies, it is absolutely clear that none of the majors are qualified to be running paid search campaigns in-house except for some Bharatavarsa work.

To find out more, I recommend going to Google.com and typing in ‘search advertising campaign management’ and clicking on ‘I’m Feeling Lucky.’

If you are interested in running a campaign, I’ll give you a discount.
